Pies ‘n’ Thighs

After a few drinks at the rooftop bar at The Wythe Hotel, it was about time for another bite of something. Now we just came from Smorgasburg and had a dinner reservation at Tanoshi in a bit, but I guess a “little something” couldn’t hurt, right? My sister’s friend recommended Pies ‘n’ Thighs, a place I’ve actually always wanted to try.

We arrived before 5pm and there were only a couple of people waiting outside since they were transitioning from lunch to dinner. The place is small and only has a few tables so we made perfect timing, gave our name, and waited for about 15 minutes before they opened up again.

We were invited inside and seated at a table next to the window. The place filled quickly. Just a short time after we were seated, we noticed several more people outside waiting to be invited in.

The restaurant serves wine and beer only. I ordered a drink made with white wine and cucumber. It was like a spiked cucumber lemonade.

We ordered the fried green tomatoes served with pickled red onions and a spicy remoulade, a mayo-based sauce.

The tomatoes were large and sliced thick, breaded in a type of cornmeal breading. They were a bit more tart than what I’m used to, but the spicy remoulade helped cut the tartness down.

My sister and I shared the Chicken & Waffles. It came with two pieces of fried chicken and two buckwheat waffles topped with cinnamon butter and roasted peaches.

The syrup and cinnamon butter made the waffles super indulgent, topped with some sweet peaches, it was definitely the sweetness you enjoyed with the savory fried chicken.

The chicken was hot and crispy. The coating wasn’t too heavy. The meat was juicy and tender.

So we skipped ordering a biscuit since we had the fried green tomatoes. Well, we ended up ordering a biscuit anyway and I am so glad we did. The biscuit is awesome! It was warm and flakey and served with a delicious honey butter. Yum! I think I’m going to have to try the chicken biscuit next time I come back.

We had no room for dessert surprisingly. It was tempting to try their famous pies, but that was gonna have to wait until another time. We had to make our way back to Manhattan for our omakase reservation. There was no sign of a break from eating today!
