Smorgasburg, Part Two

My sister and I were trying to think of somewhere to eat in the Manhattan. Instead, we decided to enjoy the nice day by eating all kinds of food outdoors. We hopped on a couple trains and made our way towards Brooklyn. It was time to go back to Smorgasburg!

It’s been a couple years since I’ve been to Smorgasburg. We really liked the Williamsburg location. It’s held on Saturdays from 11am-6pm. You should get there right when it opens so you have a chance to try a few places before the crowds take over. I made sure to bring more than enough cash this time.

We didn’t have any breakfast. It’s best to save your appetite and not eat anything before going to Smorgasburg…even better if you don’t eat a couple days prior!

Where to start? Doughnuts seemed like an appropriate breakfast and we headed to Dough. All of the doughnuts looked amazing. They have flavors like hibisus, passion fruit, and lemon poppy.

We decided to pace ourselves and share one Dule de Leche donut. It had a rich and creamy glaze topped with toasted almond slices. It wasn’t the best donut I’ve ever had, but it was very good. It was so tempting to try another flavor, but we kept moving. So many vendors, so little time!

It’s best to walk around and see what all the vendors are offering before making a decision. I wanted to try different vendors and dishes than last time.

My sister wanted some coffee. We passed by Dona Chai and figured Iced Chai with cold-press ginger would do the trick.

We were offered to try a vegan chai doughnut too. Yep, we gave in.

Ok, enough snacks. Let’s get to the real food. It was almost time for lunch and we headed to Dosa Royale.

I’ve never had a dosa before and my sister suggested I try it. A dosa is a crepe made from rice batter and black lentils. The batter is left to ferment overnight to develop a tangy flavor. It’s like a super sized crepe that are made very thin and large. It is a staple dish in South India.

We ordered the Marsala Dosa which was filled with classic curried potato. It’s pretty cool watching them make it. The batter is spread super thin over a big griddle and the fillings are added right before rolling it up.

Apparently this was on the smaller side! My sister said the ones she’s had in restaurants were gigantic. You can choose from an assortment of chutnies and sauces for dipping. They also include their house made sambar which is a lentil-based stew made with tamarind.

The dosa was great! It formed a nice crust on the outside and the potato filling was savory with a kick.

Dipped in the samar and sauce, it was delicious. I would definitely try another one next time.

There are a few picnic tables scattered around to sit down and enjoy your food. You really feel the heat when it’s sunny out. The only places that provide some shade are the few bushes and trees in the adjacent park where many people opt to eat their food sitting on the lawn.

What to try next? My sister wanted to get some Dan Dan Noodles from Noodle Lane. We actually had them last time, but they were really good.

Dan Dan Noodles are a Sichuan style noodle dish. Noodle Lane makes theirs with with egg noodles, a savory sauce, and chili oil. It’s topped with minced pork, Sichuan preserved vegetable, bean sprouts, and scallions. It has a lot of flavor and it’s pretty spicy thanks to the Sichuan peppercorns.

Oh how I wanted to try Lumpia Shack’s special of fried rice lumpia topped with adobo pork belly. They sold out last time. Unfortunately, this would be the second time I missed it since their fryer was out of commission and they had to close. Damn!
