Sangria Mahwah

I tried Sangria in Mahwah last night after being told about it by a doctor I work with. I’ve been looking forward to a good tapas place in the area. I headed over there on a Saturday night with my parents.

Dinner at Sangria

The place was packed and the hostess area was crowded with no hostess in sight for awhile. A few people actually walked out. She was running around trying to take care of everybody. I was finally able to give her my name. She was very nice. I had a reservation, but it seemed like they still seated you only once a table became available. We were still seated after a few minutes.

We had to try the sangria. I do not know why I didn’t just go with the classic red because I was not a fan of the cranberry sangria. It  tasted like cough medicine. No good. I ordered a glass of the traditional red sangria later on and it was much better.

They start you off with a plate of Pan con Tomate and olives. The tomato spread was okay, it had a pretty dominant flavor I cold not distinguish though. It was not like the garlicky spreads I’ve enjoyed in the past.

We ordered the Table Iberica with 36-month aged Jamon, Goat Cheese Wine, 18-month aged Jamon, and Manchego Cheese. They were not skimpy with the ham. It was served with a tasty pistachio sauce.

We were given a fairly generous side of sliced bread to enjoy with it.

The Bacalao Croquettes were pretty good and served with a side of aioli.

They were creamy and not too salty.

The Vieras Basque were seared scallops over white beans, chorizo, and spinach. The scallops were pretty tender. The beans had a nice smoky flavor from the chorizo.

I really liked the Tostones Sangria. They were fried plantains topped chorizo and melted Manchego cheese drizzled with balsamic. Yum!

My parents enjoyed the Mariscada Salsa Verde. The dish was more than enough for the two of them, especially after a few tapas. It had clams, mussels, shrimp, scallops, calamari, saffron rice, vegetables, and an asparagus cognac sauce.

If you skip the tapas and just order dinner, it should make for a satisfying single serving.

For dessert, we had the Churros con Chocolate and the Flan. The churros were a bit dry and not soft. It was close to closing time, so I could tell they were not made to order and may have been sitting out a bit. The chocolate dipping sauce was good.

The flan was very good. Creamy and sweet with a caramel drizzle and a few berries.

The tapas were a decent serving and had some good flavors. They weren’t out of this world and having enjoyed tapas in Spain, they do not really compare. I would like to come back to try their other tapas.
