Beyond Sushi

I’m always down for a sushi fix, but vegan sushi? It would be a first for me. My sister was in town and she wanted to try Beyond Sushi. They offer vegetarian and vegan sushi, noodles, dumplings, and dessert. It sounded interesting, so we headed to the midtown west location.

We ordered 3 rolls, dumplings, and noodles. It all looked really good.

The Spread

We ordered the Spicy Mang with black rice, avocado, mango, English cucumber topped with spicy veggies, and a toasted cayenne sauce. The Mighty Mushroom roll had six-grain rice, enoki mushrooms, baked tofu, braised shiitake, micro arugula, and a shiitake truffle sauce. The La Fiesta was made with black rice, avocado, chayote, and pickled jalapeño topped with black bean purée and kaffir lime chips with a tomato guajillo sauce.

I was skeptical at first and really missed the fish, but the rolls were delicious and had great flavors.

We also tried the Smokey Tom dumplings. They were topped with lemon panko, sumac, parsley, and a tahini sauce. We were fans and thought they were really good.

The filling was made with sundried tomato, spinach, charred onions, and smoked butternut squash.

The noodles sounded good too. We ordered the Zany Carrot Рsoba noodles, carrots, baked tofu, cashews, avocado, sesame seeds, and cilantro with a jalape̱o peanut butter sauce.

The peanut sauce was good and everything was super fresh, but the noodles were just slightly overcooked and a bit too soft.

We couldn’t leave without trying one of their two desserts. We grabbed a Black Bean Sweet Potato brownie from the open cooler. The brownie was surprisingly good. It was pretty dense, but was moist from the black beans. Not bad.

The vegan sushi was really good. Can it replace real sushi? Not for me, but I wouldn’t mind it every now and then as a healthier option. Afterwards, we stopped by Tanner Smith’s nearby for a couple cocktails.

Okay we were full, but we couldn’t resist trying one of their most popular appetizers – the eggplant chips. They were sliced super thin and fried to crispy perfection. Honey was drizzled on top and additional honey was served on the side. Delicious.
