The Chef’s Line at VOX Table

It was Saturday night and I couldn’t wait to catch up with a former coworker. I was able to modify my reservation at VOX Table from the previous night with no problems. The bustling modern restaurant serves inventive New American small plates with Spanish and French flavors. It can be found within Lamar Union’s open-air plaza in South Austin.

Dinner at VOX Table

I was able to reserve a few seats at the Chef’s Line – bar top style seating overlooking all the action of the kitchen. You can watch the chefs cook and prepare all the dishes while you eat your meal. Nice!

Place Setting

In addition to the chef-crafted small plates, they offer a menu of great craft cocktails as well. After being seated at the counter, we wasted no time ordering drinks.

Sif’s Song is made with Aviation gin, tomato caper berry infused Krogstad Aquavit, thyme, black pepper, lemon, Regans orange bitters, and sea salt.

You’ll find a few classic cocktails such as the Mint Julep as well.

Everything on the menu sounded so good. You’ll definitely want to share a few dishes. We started off with one of their most popular dishes. The Smoked Hamachi Pipettes contained a tasty coconut soy vinaigrette that you squeeze out of the pipette as you let the skewered pieces of yellowtail, tomato raisin, and pickled cucumber slide off in your mouth.

They were an excellent and fun way to start the meal.

Watching the Action

The next dish was the Calamari Noodles. Long strips of squid acted as pasta and were dressed with roasted corn, smoked tomatoes, Spanish chorizo, chili oil, and corn nuts. The calamari was very tender and the sauce was delicious. Each one of us really enjoyed this one.

It was so cool to be front and center of the nonstop kitchen line.

Potato Pillows + Pesto was up next. Sauteed gnocchi over herb pesto were topped with housemade ricotta and baby arugula – yum! The gnocchi really were like little soft pillows.

All eyes were on the chefs tonight. I couldn’t help but closely watch as our next dish was being prepared.

Next Dish

The b + b were small Yorkshire puddings stuffed with Akaushi brisket, red wine jus, horseradish aioli, and crispy leeks.

Another fantastic dish. The Yorkshire pudding was a nice golden brown on the outside and soft on the inside. The horseradish aioli added a nice little kick and I enjoyed the added crunch of the crispy leeks.

Brisket and Yorkshire Pudding

The four dishes seemed to be the perfect amount of food. We enjoyed everything so far, so why not try one more dish. Of course we had to order a couple more cocktails too.

Paula Dean Loves Butter is made with roasted corn butter-washed Dulce Vida tequila, pomegranate, serrano pepper, honey, and lime. Good stuff.

All the cocktails were great, the names were even better.

The I Can Tell We Are Going To Be Friends had prosciutto-washed El Silencio mezcal, Altos tequila, Aviation gin, honeydew melon, fig balsamic shrub, grapefruit, lime, and seal salt. It was garnished with a piece of their housemade beef jerky.

We were contemplating one more dish. One of the dishes that caught our attention every time it left the kitchen was the Prime Ribeye.

Steak Time

The 16oz steak was sliced off the bone and ready for sharing. It was garnished with fingerling potatoes, confit onions, house cured bacon, and blistered shishito peppers.

It was cooked a perfect medium rare.

The savory dishes were so good, there was no way we could leave without dessert.

The Slayer Cake was layered with orange chocolate mousse, crispy gianduja, and cardamom ganache. It was served with a scoop of toasted fennel ice cream.

We were even surprised with a special dessert of Lemon Semifreddo with graham crumbs, “pop rocks”, and strawberry sauce. How nice! The lemon semifreddo was creamy and refreshing. It was the perfect way to end our amazing meal.
