Udon Noodles and a Matcha Parfait

For dinner one night my sister and I stopped by Mimikou, a curry udon restaurant.

To drink, I ordered the Umeshu Highball – a Japanese plum liquor with soda.

Udon are thick wheat noodles. The restaurant serves Kyoto-style udon with a flavorful curry sauce made from curry powder thickened with a Japanese soup stock called dashi.

My sister ordered one with shredded vegetables and I got the chicken tempura one. They also has pieces of tofu.

We were also given large bibs to wear. Slurping thick noodles can get pretty messy! Although I noticed we were the only ones in the restaurant that were given bibs. Ha! They must have known we were visiting.

Our udon dinner was excellent and very comforting. We strolled around the area a bit before stopping by one of the most popular dessert shops in Kyoto.

Tsujiri Honten is the place to go to for matcha desserts. There’s a small sit-down restaurant on the second floor to enjoy the various matcha treats.

There was always a long line down the stairs every time we passed it, but at this particular time we avoided a line.

My sister had a glass of Iced Green Tea.

I convinced her to share one of the incredible-looking parfaits with me. The Matcha Castella Parfait had vanilla ice cream, matcha ice cream, agar jelly cubes, matcha syrup, matcha castella (Japanese sponge cake), and matcha whipped cream. Talk about matcha overload! It was delicious!

Later on that night before going back to the hotel, we may have stopped by Mos Burger for some late-night grub. The fast-food restaurant chain originated in Japan and they were everywhere, so we had to try it.

With the cool weather and all the walking we were doing, it’s very important to keep your skin hydrated. 😉

Time for bed. I was excited to go to Mount Koya the next day to spend the night in a Buddhist temple. We would have quite the journey getting there…I just had no idea at the time.
