Before heading to Notre Dame Cathedral, I figured it was a good time for lunch. After wandering the streets for a bit, I decided to grab a seat at a Café Panis nearby.
It became much warmer outside since I left the train station in Antwerp. I asked the waiter for water and extra ice while I looked over the menu.
There were a couple dishes I had to try during my short time here. One was the croque monsieur which is basically a ham and cheese sandwich. This was an open-face version with ham and emmantel cheese. An emmantal cheese is a yellow, medium-hard Swiss cheese that originated in the area around Emmental, Switzerland. It was served on a toasted brown country bread rather than a Brioche-like bread. It was not what I expected and the cheese and bread were overdone. Next!
The other dish I had to have was escargot. This was much better! The large land snails were cooked in a garlic-herb butter and served with pieces of crusty soft baguette.
I finished the tasty snails and contemplated ordering more, but I had to continue with the sightseeing.
