It was a perfect day to head to Coronado Island. We had to have some breakfast first, so we walked a few blocks to Cafe 222 located on Island Ave. The sign simply says Cafe. This quirky joint serves up American comfort classics such as egg scrambles, waffles, pancakes, and sandwiches.
We gave the host our name and were told it would be about a 15-20 minute wait. No problemo. We took a seat at the bench and waited.
After a bit, we were shown to a table inside. The place is small and simple.
We ordered a couple glasses of fresh squeezed orange juice while we looked over the menu.
The scrambles caught our eye. The pancakes and waffles sounded good, but we had to try their famous French toast.
My friend went with the Diced Ham and Swiss Scramble. All scrambles are served with griddled potatoes and a couple slices of toast.
We tried the Peanut Butter and Banana Stuffed French Toast. Bobby Flay was a big fan and featured it on Food Network’s “The Best Thing I ever Ate”.
The sweet and creamy peanut butter with sliced bananas was a winning combination. They use whole wheat bread and don’t expect much of the usual egg batter coating it. It was still a tasty dish topped with some maple syrup, butter, and powdered sugar.
I had the Green Eggs and Spam. A scramble made with diced Spam, spinach, and Jack cheese. It hit the spot!
Cafe 222 is a solid choice if you’re looking for a tasty breakfast. Service was good and they make sure to refill your coffee when needed. Now, it was time to get an Uber and head to Coronado Island!
