What Is Omakase?

Omakase (oh-mah-kah-say) is a Japanese phrase that roughly means “leave it to the chef”. Basically, your meal is in the chefs hands. It is a tasting menu that showcases the freshest fish and ingredients that are available at that time.

I’ve loved sushi for years now, but this particular sushi obsession started a few years ago while researching a cool foodie gift for my sister’s birthday. She gave me an awesome birthday gift, the 10-course tasting menu at Degustation located in the East Village. (Thanks, Vicki!) It was great! I’m really liking these tasting menus. I have to try more!

Leaning towards a Japanese restaurant this time, the term omakase popped up. “Omakase, what’s that?”, I thought. Many restaurants in NYC offered the sushi tasting menu and I bought a gift certificate to Sushi Azabu in Tribeca. We both agreed it was quite the experience and it was delicious! I’ve never tasted Tuna so melt-in-your-mouth delicious, Ikura so rich, and Uni so fresh. All of it being individually prepared and served to you by the sushi chef. I didn’t want it to end. Needless to say, I’ve been hooked ever since!

So grab a seat at the Sushi Bar (the only place to fully enjoy an omakase experience), sit back, relax, order some sake, and get ready to take your taste buds on a gastronomic journey you’ll never forget.
