We were truly enjoying all the fabulous Thai flavors and dishes during our trip. There didn’t seem to be too many quality Thai restaurants right on Patong Beach though. They were very touristy with workers trying to attract every single person that passed by. You know those places – huge menus with pictures available in every language. I prefer to steer clear of those places.
We ate Thai food every single day until our second say in Phuket. Sometimes you crave other foods. In this case, we really missed Italian food. Where would we find good pizza and pasta in this area? The couple of Italian places we came upon were along the same touristy lines with nagging workers standing outside. They even guarantee to refund your money if you don’t like it. Yikes! Thankfully, we found out about Leo & Mas Ristorante Italiano E Pizzeria!
Both natives of the Veneto region of Italy, the owner, Leonida, and chef, Massimo, happen to meet in Thailand over shared interest and common passion of good food. They decided to open an Italian restaurant in Phuket where they could share traditional Italian recipes with those looking for authentic Italian cooking. Well, they did a fantastic job!
The restaurant is tucked away behind a small building along Thawewong Road. You have to walk down a long driveway next to The Pizza Company leading to the Banthai Beach Resort & Spa to find it. I loved how the restaurant is right near hectic Patong beach, but situated in a peacefully secluded area.
The ambiance and decor were lovely. Our waitress was very nice. We looked over the menu and everything sounded so good! Their wood-fired pizzas sounded great. I also had to have a glass of wine! I ordered the Salamino Piccante with mozzarella, tomato, and spicy salami.
My sister went with the Vegetariana with tomato and vegetables. Being vegan, she requested to have it without cheese and it was no problem.
The pizzas arrived nice and hot. They looked great. The taste? Amazing! We both agreed that this was some of the best pizza we’ve ever had. That’s a lot coming from a couple gals from New Jersey and New York City where an abundance of quality pizzerias can be found. The crust was perfect and had a nice chew to it. It was nice and moist holding the perfect amount of cheese and toppings. Oh how we missed pizza! It was made even better with a nice glass of red wine.
We both finished our pizzas with no problem. I’m not even joking when I say we actually could have ordered another pie each. They were so good! But okay let’s digest a bit. Perhaps try something on their dessert menu. I saw one of my favorite desserts and ordered the crème brûlée. It was very good and served with chocolate sauce on the side.
My sister had some mango sorbet. Nice and refreshing.
Our dinner at Leo & Mas was fantastic. The pizza was simply delicious. My sister could not stop raving about her pizza. I’m so glad we found this authentic Italian restaurant!
So the following night, we actually came back! Can you tell we really enjoyed their pizza?
Another glass of wine for me and my sister ordered the mango smoothie.
It was a bit later in the day than when we arrived the previous day. So a bread basket was served with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, along with a couple small bites of antipasto.
I was excited to see raw oysters on the menu. The waitress checked if they were available and they arrived just in time. I wanted to try half a dozen. They were very fresh, but very salty. Not surprising since the waters in the area are extremely salty. They were still good, but just much saltier than what I’m used to.
It was really difficult not to order those perfectly wood-fired pizzas again. This time I went with the Saporita with tomato, mozzarella, mushrooms, spicy salami, and shaved parmesan cheese. Delicious!
My sister stayed loyal to the Vegetariana with the great crust, tasty tomatoes, and generous amount of grilled vegetables.
Do I dare say we actually came back for a third time? Yep! As much as I always want to try as many new places as possible, I had to make an exception this time. If the pizza was that good, the pasta had to be amazing too!
I ordered the Fettuccine with wild mushrooms and parma ham. It was wonderful! The pasta was perfectly al dente with just the right amount of creamy mushroom sauce accented with strips of the salty parma ham. Yum.
I don’t even have to tell you what my sister ordered. We had to laugh because it was the first time we had so much pizza within a few days, but the pizza was just so good we didn’t even care.
If you’re in Phuket near Patong Beach, an area full of touristy mediocre restaurants, make sure you check out Leo & Mas Ristorante Italiano E Pizzeria for delicious and authentic Italian food. You will not be disappointed. We still think about that pizza!
