I had a free Saturday afternoon to grab some lunch. There were my usual places in Ridgewood, but decided to finally try a place I’ve been curious about since it opened, Le Bon Choix, a small French fare cafe with a focus on locally sourced rotisserie chicken.
I’m all about a good chicken sandwich and the Cote Du Rhone would be my sandwich of choice.
In addition to boring old water, I also had an Izze Sparkling Grapefruit. I’ve never tried these sparking juices before. It was refreshing and not too sweet. Every once in a while I enjoy a nice fizzy drink, but try to avoid soda.
It didn’t take very long for my sandwich to arrive. It had coleslaw, gruyere, and chunks of the rotisserie chicken dressed with some espresso BBQ sauce. Extra sauce was provided as well. I ordered it Bocuse Style which added crispy chicken skin and an egg.
I also tried the Mac ‘N’ Cheese. The cheese sauce was fairly watery and it was pretty bland.
Back to the sandwich! It looked good. Unfortunately, the best part of the sandwich was the espresso BBQ sauce. The rotisserie chicken was okay, but just a bit dry and lacked seasoning. The gruyere and coleslaw didn’t add much of anything. The worst part was the chicken skin. It was burnt and very tough making the sandwich difficult to eat. It was not crispy at all.
After a bit, the brioche bun got soggy and began falling a part every time I tried to pick it up. It was a mess.
I was looking forward to finally making it to Le Bon Choix, but lunch was a disappointment. I would not mind coming back to try a rotisserie chicken meal and other sides, but for the price, I felt like I could get a tastier meal at Boston Market. Service was good though and I enjoyed the cozy ambiance.
