When it comes to iconic foods, Maine has a few. The first thing that usually comes to mind is lobster of course, but the coastal state is known for a couple other foods on the sweeter side – the Blueberry Pie and Whoopie Pie – and the best place to try both is Two Fat Cats Bakery on India Street on the east side of the Old Port in Portland, Maine.
The cozy bakery is turning out freshly baked pies, signature cakes, cookies, cupcakes, and other specialty treats all made from scratch. They value high-quality ingredients and time-honored baking traditions and techniques
Maine is famous for its wild blueberries and it’s supposedly the birthplace of the Whoopie Pie. The dessert consists of two round mounds of chocolate cake sandwiching a creamy frosting filling. In 2011, the state even declared the Whoopie Pie as the “official state treat” of Maine. So I asked for a piece of Blueberry Pie and a Classic Whoopie Pie.
My treats were carefully packed and I brought them back to the hotel to enjoy. I also ordered an Iced Green Tea.
The Classic Whoopie Pie was delicious. The cake was soft and moist and the creamy filling had just the right amount of sweetness. The last time I had one of these was in grade school and it was one of those highly processed major brand ones. This homemade version was a delightful treat.
The Blueberry Pie made with Maine wild blueberries was fantastic. The surprisingly small firm blueberries were mildly sweet and tart. Wild blueberries have half the amount of sugar as cultivated blueberries. The wild variety also has double the amount of antioxidants and fiber. Good stuff!
Two Fat Cats Bakery is a must while visiting Portland, Maine. They also have a location in South Portland. All of their freshly baked goods looked fabulous, but the blueberry pie and whoopie pies should not be missed!
