After an incredible 24-hour stopover in Lisbon, it was on to the next stop. Running on about 3 hours of sleep, I made my way to Lisbon Portela Airport to catch my early flight to Germany. Another new country pinned on the map! Off to Berlin!
I arrived sometime in the afternoon, grabbed an Uber, and made my way to my hotel located in the heart of Berlin’s Mitte neighborhood. It was a smooth and easy check in process.
With hardly any sleep and a slight hangover, I needed a nice hearty meal. I had just the place in mind to enjoy one of the country’s most iconic dishes, schnitzel (meat that is thinly pound, breaded, and fried). Felix Austria is a small cafe to enjoy some traditional Austrian food. I heard they turn out one of the best schnitzels in the city.
I requested a small table inside and started with a glass of white wine.
I glanced over the menu even though I already knew what I came for, so I ordered the “small” portion of the wiener schnitzel – a type of schnitzel made of a thin, breaded, pan-fried veal cutlet. The name means “Viennese cutlet” in German. The marvelous creation was soon placed in front of me.
This was a small?! The large breaded veal cutlet was served with a simple potato salad with red onions, a light refreshing cucumber salad, and a wedge of lemon that’s used to brighten up the fried dish.
Their wiener schnitzel was really good. The breading was golden brown, crispy, and evenly fried throughout. The veal was very tender. Those first few bites were nearly orgasmic.
I was happily enjoying my first meal in Berlin and savoring every bite. I easily finished the whole thing. Apparently the large portion comes with a second cutlet, but I found the small to be plenty. I chilled out for a bit over a Stiegl Pils, a light dry pilsner brewed in Salzburg, Austria.
By the time I finished, all the tables were occupied and people walking in were told it would be an hour wait.
After my filling schnitzel meal, I walked across the street to browse Marheineke Markthalle for a bit. I stocked up on bottles of water to bring back to the hotel.
Back at the hotel, I decided to call it an early and get ready for bed. I still had a good amount of sleep to catch up on since arriving in Lisbon the previous morning. I had a full day tour planned to see some popular sights and try some of Berlin’s iconic eats!
